An Ad Agency Advertises for Additional Clients

[I was trying for a complete alliteration, but failed on the last word.  I did think of using Activity, but it was not quite right] This is a story of a prize winning ad agency who advertised for a new client and said they would use their prize money to fund the media spend. Just on … Continued

Marketing to nobody

I like this post from Seth Godin’s blog: http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2011/05/marketing-to-nobody.html Nobody wears a watch any more. Nobody wears a tie either. Nobody shops at a bookstore, at least nobody I know. The market of nobody is big indeed. You can do really well selling to nobody if you do your homework. In fact, most companies selling … Continued

A different marketing channel

This is a video about advertising using a different channel. The ad agency, Ogilvy, gives some numbers at the end of the video and says it was 7x the number in the room for the event.  I think they underestimate this.  Each person getting out of the taxi is going to mention it to at … Continued

Can you spot the difference between a fake smile and a real one?

According to research most people are very bad at this. I scored 13/20 on this BBC test. http://www.bbc.co.uk/science/humanbody/mind/surveys/smiles/ Smiling is so important in making the world go round that people learn how to fake a smile well.  It makes their life easier. I would never do that!

The “significance trouser”

A recent case study on how WD-40 was launched in Germany introduced me to the “signifigance trouser”  The company was Mayer de Groot. This is a serious study and the results were very good. Winston Churchill said: “Use simple words that everyone knows, and then everyone will understand” The current vogue of inventing your own … Continued

Can anyone truly understand and empathize with another?

Another video from TED.com my favourite site for thought provoking ideas By leading the Americans in his audience  step by step through the thought process, sociologist Sam Richards sets an extraordinary challenge: can they understand — not approve of, but understand — the motivations of an Iraqi insurgent? And by extension, can anyone truly understand … Continued

From TED.com Ron Gutman reviews a raft of studies about smiling, and reveals some surprising results. Prepare to flex a few facial muscles as you learn more … Continued

One late summer evening, two copywriters sat down…

… at their keyboards to craft sales letters for almost identical products. They were very much alike, these two copywriters. Both had years of experience writing every type of ad and were dynamos at selling to their core markets. Both writers were also dedicated students of direct response marketing and were up on the latest … Continued

Advertising doesn’t always work

I know this is old but I came across it again and it made me smile. Seth Godin talked about standing out at TED.com in 2003. This is more relevant today than when he presented at TED.com in 2003 http://www.ted.com/talks/seth_godin_on_sliced_bread.html
